Smuin's The Christmas Ballet breaks with tradition—in a good way.

Smuin dancers Nicole Haskins, Mengjun Chen and Lauren Pschirrer in “We Three Kings,” created by dancer Rex Wheeler, and part of The Christmas Ballet.

Smuin has a tradition, they say, of breaking tradition—and this year’s The Christmas Ballet is no exception.

The innovative San Francisco-based contemporary ballet company is bringing its singularly innovative approach to the upcoming production, promising an event that will dazzle audiences and start the holiday season off with a jolt of artistic energy. Since the pieces comprising The Christmas Ballet are chosen based on the unique talents of its dancers, “it gives us a chance to showcase every individual and their gifts,” says Artistic Director Celia Fushille.

In addition to delivering displays of passion and technical exactitude, the two acts are delightfully eclectic. “I can think of no other stage that will present dance performed to anything from Bach to Eartha Kitt all in one evening, and feature everything from pristine classical ballet technique to Irish step-dancing, tap to hula,” she continues. “Add in some beautiful visuals, and it’s something that audiences of any age will enjoy!”
Dec. 6-10, tickets $25-$84, Mountain View Center for the Arts
