The Big Scoop

Unusual flavors, local ingredients add punch to the palate

Make room, Smitten and Tin Pot. Oregon’s Salt & Straw ice cream has scooped up two new Silicon Valley locations. As with its San Francisco outpost, the company focuses on local ingredients (Cowgirl Creamery, Sightglass Coffee) and flavors that Baskin- Robbins could only dream about: freckled mint TCHO-colate chip, bone marrow and smoked cherries; and Mt. Tam cheese with toasted Acme bread. Giving back to the community is part of the recipe, with support of local elementary schools. Five pints shipped to your door run $65, while a three-month subscription of seasonal five-packs is $195. 1309 Burlingame Ave., Burlingame; 250 University Ave. Palo Alto
