Waiting to Inhale

New drinks, menu and decor at Marriott San Mateo make for sleek sips and bites.

The eye-catching drink is delivered in a closed box and aromatic vapors waft free only after the lid is opened.

 

The intersection of tech and interesting dining comes together in an unexpected place: CRAFT/ CODE kitchen & cocktails. It’s found in the newly renovated Marriott San Mateo, a crossroads for Silicon Valley travelers and employees of nearby Rakuten, bills.com and Larry Ellison’s Oracle Corp. Dated 20-year-old interiors with heavy curtains and dark furniture have been replaced with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and a minimalistic new lobby, restaurant and bar that have already become popular for informal workday and post-work get-togethers. Along with executive chef Scott Gorman’s tuna tartare with mango, cucumber and taro chips; sustainable salmon with lemongrass, miso and bok choy; and Guinness- braised short ribs with horseradish mashed potatoes, you can have a glass of Miner Family Winery red blend ($50) or the intriguing Smoking Carriage ($18), made of Dictador rum, angostura bitters and oolong syrup touched with fresh smoke.
